Biologists have been confronted, right at the beginning (2000 years ago or so) , to the diversity of the living organisms on Earth. They had to do statistics and classification (systematics). Thanks to the progress of technology, they are now able to investigate the very detailed functioning of cells and molecules, asking physicists and chemists to their rescue.
On the contrary, astronomers have discovered galaxies a century ago only, and have long observed and studied the very intimate details of one such object : our own Galaxy. They are inside the cell doing physics and chemistry. Thanks to the progress of technology, they discovered recently the amazing diversity of galaxies in the Universe. Undoubtedly, they are about to ask statisticians and systematicians to their rescue.
